Shopping centres want to offer their visitors a pleasant experience and set the scene for the individual shops in an inviting way. For this, an electrical infrastructure which is both functional and design-orientated is essential.
The challenge: The extensive spaces are permanently subjected to high traffic loads, such as footfall, transport or even vehicles.
For heavily frequented buildings, there are also special fire protection requirements: Even during a fire, escape and rescue routes must still remain usable and the maintenance of electrical function for key electrical systems, such as sprinkler systems and emergency lighting, must be guaranteed.

OBO solutions for shopping centres:
- Flushfloor cassettes with electrical connections: The OBO cassette systems, which are installed flush with the floor and which are made of stainless steel or brass, can accept up to twelve electrical devices for power, data and multimedia connections. The integrated hinged cover of the robust cassettes can be operated easily, guaranteeing easy access to the electrical connections. The cassettes represent the ideal solution for heavily used floors with coverings made of marble, stone, tiles or wood and which are dry- or moist-cleaned.
- Flushfloor cassettes with electrical connection for mechanical wet cleaning: The floors in shopping centres are frequently cleaned with self-driving cleaning machines. For these so-called wet-cleaning methods, OBO has developed special cassettes to accept electrical connections, which can withstand both the ingress of water and high traffic loads of up to two tonnes. Thus, even highly used areas can be supplied with electrical connections, without the need to limit the cleaning methods.
- Round floor sockets with heavy-duty competence: Originally, the small, round GES R2 floor sockets were developed for heavy-duty applications in car showrooms. Their die-cast zinc housing means that they are extremely stable and thus ideally suited for use in shopping centres. The visible diameter of the floor socket is just 140 mm. Despite these slender dimensions, the small floor socket offers space for up to two sockets and two data connections. Thus, the GES R2 is particularly suitable for till areas or kiosks, which do not continually require power and data connections. With the IP66 protection class, the metal variant is also suitable for wet-cleaned floors in indoor areas. This is particularly relevant for installations in shopping centres, as high-pressure cleaners are frequently used here. Thanks to the IP66 rating, when closed the GES R2 can withstand this with ease.
- Metal fire protection duct for fire load-free zones: The OBO PYROLINE Rapid fire protection duct offers an ideal opportunity for encapsulated cable routing in the area of escape and rescue routes, and in stairwells. If there is a fire, an intumescent interior coating comes to life, suffocating the cable fire at inception and preventing dangerous smoke gas development. In addition, the system has an easy-to-open cover, thus allowing the simple retro-assignment of cables during later operation. This saves operating costs for the owner.
- Lightweight concrete fire protection duct for the highest requirements: The OBO PYROLINE Con D/S fire protection duct made of lightweight concrete fire protection plates can be used in indoor and outdoor areas. It protects both the safety cabling against a fire from outside, but can also protect both the building and people against a cable fire. Its smooth surface means that it can be painted or papered over easily, allowing optimum adaptation to the environment.
- Cable support systems: The reliable flow of power and data in shopping centres around the world is guaranteed by the OBO cable support systems, such as the RKS-Magic® system with its innovative plug connection. Thanks to the consistent alignment to the requirements of daily installation work, the RKS-Magic®, with its innovative plug system, offers a wealth of practical advantages. The Magic cable tray system from OBO Bettermann stands for three basic aspects: efficiency, stability and safety.
- Lightning protection systems: OBO lightning and surge protection systems work reliably and with tested safety to ensure the protection of people, buildings and property against lightning and surge voltage damage. The products are subjected to comprehensive testing in OBO’s own BET Test Centre and have proved themselves through decades of use around the world.
